Dear Mailart Participants:

Once again, a huge thank you to all who participated in this dynamic project. "We Are One Human Family!" was initially exhibited during the 2008 Medford, Oregon celebration of Martin Luther King Day. Since then it has been circulating around Southern Oregon. It was on display at Rogue Community College during Black History Month. This fall it was exhibited at the Multicultural Fair. In November it will be on display again during a Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon festival celebrating cultural diversity.

This mailart is definitely making an impact on Southern Oregon. Thank you for supporting Dr. King's message through your generous and beautiful pieces of artwork!

The submission deadline has passed for this project. THANK YOU to all those artists who submitted mailart! Those items received by December 15, 2007 are posted below. Those received after December 15, 2007 will not appear on this site. However, they will be included in the exhibit of original works on January 20th, 2008 during the celebration of Martin Luther King Day. Details follow:

MEDFORD TO CELEBRATE 6TH ANNUAL MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY

The 2008 tribute to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be held in Medford on Sunday, January 20, 2008 at South Medford High School Auditorium from 1:30 - 4:00 PM.

A special feature of this year’s program will be an international MailArt exhibit in memory of the 40th anniversary of the death of Dr. King. Revered throughout the world as a civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Dr. King’s “dream” continues to inspire people around the world who are still struggling for dignity and social and economic justice. The theme of the exhibit is “We Are One Human Family” and hundreds of pieces of art illustrating the spirit of Dr. King’s “dream” have been mailed from 33 countries.

Nick Hall will open the program at 2:00 in the auditorium with drumming and a Native American invocation.

Mayor Gary Wheeler will follow with the official proclamation of Dr. Martin Luther King Day in Medford.

The keynote speaker for the 2008 program is JoAnn Bowman of Portland. Bowman is the Executive Director of Oregon Action and a former state representative. She will address the power of grassroots action and how it can influence a range of social and economic justice issues that touch all of us and affect our quality of life personally and collectively.

Flamur Vehapi from Kosova is a student attending both RCC and SOU. His major is Psychology with minors in both History and International Studies. Vehapi will recount what happened in his country during the war in Kosova and then offer examples and possibilities for living together in the spirit envisioned by Dr. King.

Washington Elementary school students in 2nd & 5th grades will present one of Dr. King’s speeches.

Seth Adaida will serve again as Master of Ceremonies.

The following music and dance performances will be interspersed among the speakers:
Ballet Folklórico Ritmo Alegre, José Arreguín, and the Rogue Valley Peace Choir.

After the program the audience is invited to meet the speakers and performers and enjoy light refreshments in the cafeteria.

This year the Task Force that plans the annual Medford MLK celebration suggests that each person attending the event donate one can of food at the door. The Task Force will give the canned food donations to the local Teen Drop Center which helps homeless teens, at-risk teens and run-away youth find safe resources.

There is still a need for financial contributions to cover the known costs of the 2008 program. Contributions made out to the Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon earmarked for the 2008 MLK program are tax deductible.
